The Future of Work
In early 2003 I got into a platform called: #SecondLife … SecondLife is an expansive multi-player world created 100% by its “meta-citizens”. Within one week of being on the platform (back then) I had spent about 1k of fiat currency to purchase in-world items that I could use in the “game”. These items, digital in nature, and would never leave the virtual world, ranged from clothing items, to vehicles, homes and at one point I even owned an entire parcel of land (an island) where I built a home and an office building for a business I had started in-world.
Fast forward to 2021, my avatar “Kenshō Nishi” lives on, on the SecondLife platform, and the digital assets he owns are still applicable in the digital world. He’s an “OG” avatar, and though I don’t still pilot him, if I did, he would hold a kind of value irreplaceable. But what does this have to do with the future of work?
The emergence of NFTs has pulled the spotlight back in, front and center and the word “Metaverse” is used loosely to describe an ecosystem of technologies, all aligned to blur the lines between our physical and digital lives.
