Truth Is, We’ve BEEN In The Metaverse
It’s always interesting to me when I hear people talk about the “Metaverse” as if it’s something that’s “coming”. Where even more odd than that is when I hear people say: “I dunno how healthy it will be for people to be living their lives in some Metaverse…”
Fact is, we’ve all been (for the most part) living in the “Metaverse” since about 2003 with the emergence of MySpace. Spending countless hours in the digital platform, sharing our lives on a consistent basis. As other platforms emerged, Facebook, Twitter, our immersion increased and even MORE of our lives played out … Digitally.
Today, our attention is dialed into TikTok, Instagram, AND Facebook persist, along with a myriad of other digital platforms where we communicate our ideas, connect with each other and live out a substantial amount of our lives. I believe the misconception rest in the idea that the Metaverse is Virtual Reality, when in fact Virtual Reality or “VR” is only one layer of the Metaverse, Augmented Reality or “AR” being another and Mixed Reality or “MR” being another. To understand what the Metaverse is, and what it will further develop to become, we have to get at its root meaning. “Meta” or “beyond” and “verse” referring to the universe suggest that “Metaverse” simply means: “beyond the universe” or “next universe” — SO let’s circle back to our “realities”, cause this is where they come in … To live in the Metaverse one would simply have to break the barriers of this universe, the physical one we live in, and go beyond it.
